Non ti so dire come andrà a finire. Non ti so dire come andrà. 🇬🇧Today is your day, Earth. It is a sad paradox thinking that if in the last months you have been able to catch a breath, if you managed to send us signs that you are still alive, it is just because it is us humans that are sick. A terrible virus has forced us to stop, to close factories, to cancel flights and consume less. We have lost family members, friends, acquaintances, grandparents, writers, artists, doctors and nurses, we are destroyed in spirit. And yet you bring the dolphins back in our harbours, deers in our gardens, water turns crystal clear, the skies as blue as ever. Is it possible this is our only option? Is it possible that your survival is inversely linked to ours, that you can regain strengths only when we lose them? I know, there is no need for you to remind me how badly we have been treating you recently, right now there are very few people left who still don't recognise this. Have mercy towards those that are still denying it, those are people that place profits and petty interests on top of anything and are just unable to appreciate small joys and the beauty that you surround us with. Before being your enemies, they are of their brother men, ready to exploit them just like they do with your resources. I cannot tell you how it will end. I can't wait for the moment this virus will pass, when people can get back to hug each other...but I am also aware that this will almost certainly mean to get back to abuse you again, starting from where we left off, probably going even faster because there will be lots to catch up, with sales, growth, GDPs and reckless consumptions. I am sad. I want humans to get healthier again (most of them have a good heart, you know?), and yet I also want YOU to be well, I want your forests to flourish, I want your seas and oceans to thrive, I want icecaps to remain ice and I want animals to be free and in peace. I just want the best for all. My worst fear is for us to learn nothing from the pandemic, no lesson taken. I am afraid we won't have enough courage to say enough and admit that the system we have contributed to create and that we persist on defending is the same one that will annihilate us. Climate change, natural disasters, pandemics (included the one we are facing now), social injustice, waste problem, biodiversity loss, poverty in third world countries...they are all consequences of our insatiable greed. We understood that in time, but we were running and we could not stop; now that we were forced to stop, will we be able to change pace before getting back on track? I cannot tell you how it will go. I can however tell you how I wish it should go: I see humanity getting out of this pandemic and after crying its deaths it will start taking care of the living, especially those that suffered the biggest loss, left without a job or a house. There will be problems to solve, people to feed, new jobs to create, but we will put all efforts in inventing a new system, a way we never tried before, something that can value equality among people, which can give dignity to each man, woman and child and that can give priority at the sustenance of every being while at the same time being sustainable and respectful towards you, Earth. To those that shout this is utopia I say, it is not going to be easy and transition cannot be without pain, but it can (must) be done. If the world's richest 1% owns 44% of the global wealth, it is a matter of distribution and not lack of resources. If in one year the average Bengali can live producing 0,29 tons of Co2 while citizens of USA and Australia are responsible for more than 16 tons of Co2 emissions per capita, it is a matter of balancing back the figures and do some justice in consumptions. If 59% of the Planet's arable lands are used to grow crops to feed animals rather then people, it is a problem of ethical, political and economic decisions, as much as a matter of small daily dietary choices each of us can take anytime. If there is a will there is a way, and we can make a huge difference NOW. In the meanwhile I ask you to continue to show us all the marvels we thought would exist only in books, please go on filling our coasts with dolphins, turtles and fish, crowd our parks with deers, boars and foxes, get back to breath deeply and show us your entire beauty, I hope man can finally evolve and understand that we are Nature, therefore there is no us if there is no you, and to protect you Earth is no act of benevolence, it is a simple act of survival. In 2070, when we celebrate 100th Earth Day, I hope I can still find you here. 1. source https://inequality.org/facts/global-inequality/
